Interesting contrast between Makovsky's and Vasnetsov's work. Seems like one depicts wealth and good life and the other draws attention to suffering and sadness. I haven't really seen the work of these two side by side... By the way, I thought that Vasnetsov mostly created icons and not so much regular paintings, am I correct?

Not exactly. He had some very important commissions for religious works, but his real specialty was historical paintings and scenes from myth and folklore. Did a lot of excellent portraits and landscapes as well.
